Bryce 2

This design is the same as Bryce 1 but is from a different angle. I chose to put it in the Bronx because there aren't any nice buildings where I live and thought that would bring attention to the area.

Bryce 1

My Bryce design I made on the computer is of the same model building I made. The building wasn't hard to design on Bryce because I used basic shapes like a rectangle and cylinders. I also made the trees and the grass like on my model. I didn't design the pool and cookout area on the roof because that was hard to do. On Bryce it is kind of different but the same idea.

Dream Star

The building I designed is an apartment building that has a pool and cookout area on the roof. It has grass and trees on the outside with a nice walkway entrance to the building. My building is near my neighborhood and is located in between Westchester ave, Havemeyer Ave, and Waterbury Ave. Now there are empty lots on those grounds that's why I chose that location to put my building. My building would have many balcony's on each floor and two elevators on the side inside the pilars. My building has a nice view for those who live on the high floors and is around stores, supermarkets, schools, and hospitals.

Working with Watercolors

We went to the Brooklyn Promenade to paint with watercolors. I thought it was fun and it was a new experience. We walked from Manhattan to Brooklyn on the bridge. I liked that you could see the whole nyc from there. I did the shading of the clouds from dark to light. Fara helped us use the watercolors to make the clouds. It was a good painting but I feel I could have done better. I didn't understand the meaning of watercolors and I used alot of paint and not enough water, that would have set the image.

On the Ferry

When we rode the Ferry I enjoyed the view from the boat. I also enjoyed seeing the different boats like the speed boats, jet ski's, sailboats, and the big cargo boats. I haven't been on the Ferry since I was little so I didn't appreciate the views until now. I am afraid of the water so I just stayed in the cabin and didn't dare to step out on the balcony. People were laughing at me but I don't care I am really afraid of the ocean water.

Frank Gehry 4

Franks monumental works are the Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota, which was completed in 1990 and was one of his first monumental works. Frank was chosen to do this building after a long selection process because it was clear that he "showed that he really understood the mission and dream of the museum". Some more are the Guggenheim Museum which shows sections of it's steel skeleton but is mostly covered in thin tissue like paper titanium, warm limestone, and glass. Pilar Vlades explains that this project gave Gehry the opportunity "to test his vision of a pileup of buildings like an acropolis..." speaking about the Loyola Law school.The Walt Disney Concert Hall which was considered a "serene, ennobling building that will give people in this city of private places a new sense of the pleasures of public space" said by Paul Goldberger. It is the permanent home of the Los Angeles philharmonic. Gehry is a distinguished professor of architecture at Columbia University in NYC, and also teaches at Yale University. He has done other pieces, like the Dancing House that is in downtown Prague, Czech Republic his design stands out because this building is like two people dancing. Frank Gehry is still working on buildings that are progress like the Atlantic Yards in NYC, and the Performing Arts Complex at the World Trade Center sitein NYC.

Frank Gehry 3

Frank has a Postmodernist architectural style he has showed that in most if his pieces like the Guggenheim Museum, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. He has worked with many people such as Arnold Shreir his mentor and the person who helped him create his first work, which was a house addition. He joined sculptures with Claes Oldenburg, Coosje Van Bruggen, and Richard Serra on an exhibition. He made friends with Gregory Walsh, Peter Eisenman, Kenny Price, Ed Moses, and Ron Davis. Frank felt like an “outcast” around his peers because he didn’t always do what they wanted but when he started receiving awards from them he felt apart of them.
Although Frank has built his reputation slowly he has gained a lot of respect and has accomplished many pieces of art work. Frank is viewed as a celebrity and has created many sculptures and buildings, he has showed several patterns using style and objects that he enjoys. A lot of his creations are based on his child hood nick- name “Fish”, which he uses often.

Some of Gehry’s early works were his pink house that he reconstructed with metals, fencing, concrete, wood, and glass. He exposed the wooden support beams in the interior of the house. After that his reputation started slow it began with furniture. Frank earned a name with an affordable furniture line called Easy Edges, he then designed a second line named Rough Edges. These pieces were expensive because few were built. Franks reputation became known when his friend Ron Davis asked for his help. Together they designed a house with an art studio for Ron, and incorporated his style. This helped Frank developed his own personal style by using natural material.
More of Frank’s early works was the Guggenheim Museum, he used titanium sheet on the exterior part of the building. This building was built on a former container and storage site. It has three main floors and the titanium sheathing makes it look like a fish. Another design was the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Lillian Disney donated 50 million dollars in memory of her late husband Walt Disney, the business people felt that this was a big project. Frank Gehry was picked to design the concert hall. Nicolas Koshalek explained, “Frank is at a period in his career in which he has the potential to design one of the greatest buildings of the Twentieth Century. He is an architect of the highest ability…”. It is made from stainless steel and has a billowing wood ceiling to give it an acoustic sound when the orchestra is playing.

Frank Gehry 1

Frank Gehry was born on February 28, 1929 and was raised into a Jewish family in Toronto Ontario. Gehry’s father Irving married his mother Thelma, Irving worked different jobs and liked to fight in the streets for money. This was passed down to Frank, he was a Boxer and participated in full-time Karate. As a child Frank used to get bullied, Kids would call him “fish” because he smelled, this made him lose interest in his religion. He was creative with architecture like his grandmother Caplan. Both would build little cities out of scraps of wood. He had realized his passion for buildings and decided to make a career out of it. He moved to California and studied at Los Angeles City College and graduated from the University of Southern California’s School of Architecture. After graduation he spent time in the field of architecture in numerous other jobs such service in the U.S. Army. He attended Harvard Graduate School of Design to study city planning. He was married and divorced to Anita Snyder and remarried to Berta Aquiler. He has two daughters from his first wife and two son’s from his second wife. Gehry spent many years working in traditional architecture for the firms Pereira and Luckman, Victor Gruen Associates, and Andre Remondet. He experienced money problems during much of his firms early days.

Sony Building

AT&T also known as the Sony Building was built in 1984 and was designed by Philip Johnson. This building is 648 ft. at 37 stories high. It is Postmodern Architecture. It has ornaments of "Chippendale Pendiment". It also has an arched entrance way. This building is beige and tan and is very nice inside.

Lipstick Building

The lipstick Building is 453 ft. and 138 meters. It was completed in 1986 and has 34 floors. It was designed by Johnson/ Burgee Architects. The base of this building is held by columns. The entrance is a Post-modern Hall and the exteriors walls are a contiuous color of red enameled imperial granite and steel. When I saw this building for the first time I was under it but then we walked a few blocks down I saw why they call it the lipstick building.

Citigroup Building

The Citigroup Center was founded from 1974-1977. It has 59 floors and is 915 ft. and 279 meters. Hugh Stubbins Jr. was the Architect who made this building a certain way so that there was space for the St. Peter's Church. This building is a shiny silver color, it has a 45 degree angle on the top and has four huge columns on the bottom. Inside has double deck elevators and is one of the talleset buildings in N.Y.C.

MY ARCHITECT MOVIE

Louis Kahn was an architect who was a man of many works. One of his most recent was the Yale Art Gallery, and the British Art Center which was finished after his death. Louis died in 2004. He was a good person but did not think women were equal to men. Workers that worked for him at his office, listened to his views and had to be accurate and get the details to be correct. Architects usually have alot of money but Louis Kahn would owe builders money because the buildings were over budget. To Architects, fine building is all that matters. Architects like to draw and see sights. They have to be good at math because they need to have buildings to scale. They also have to be good at english because they have to know how to speak in complete sentences.

THE CHRYSLER BUILDING

The Chrysler Building was built in May 27, 1930. The architect of this building was Willam Van Alen. He was asked to construct the building by Walter P. Chrysler. The building is 1,047 feet (319 meters) tall. The Chrysler Building has 77 floors. It is a art - deco skyscraper.

FIRST TRIP OUT

My first trip out we walked to Chelsea Piers. We went to a gallery to see pictures of skyscrapers, not all were skyscrapers. The pictures were taken by Ezra Stoller and were all in black and white. He died in 2004. I remember seeing the JFK airport, the day picture was way different then in the night picture. We also went to this park that was constructed differently than all the other Public City Parks. It was an attractive park. We went to a different park and saw the Roxy Pane Sculpture and the Metropolitan Insurance Building, and the Flatiron Building.

Metlife Insurance Building

The Mertopolitan life insurance building also known as the Metlife Building, was constructed in 1909. The construction started in 1893. The arcitects for the building were Napolean LeBurn & sons-Hedden Construction Corp. The building is 700feet (213meters) high. The Met Life building has 50 floors. Its color is sandy beige. On the top of the tower there is a clock as well as on the sides.

United Nations Headquarters

The United Nations headquarter was built in 1950 by Wallace K. Harrison. It was built with 38 floors, east and west walls are made with Thermopane glass and the north and south walls are made with silver-mirror like glass. When I first saw the building, I didnt like it because it was too plain and it looked like a big book in the sky. But then I changed my mind because it stands out and catches your eye.

Flat Iron Building

The Flatiron Building was built by Daniel Burnham and John Wellborn Root, in 1902. It stands at the height of 285 feet(87m) and has 22 floors. Made with the classical greek column,the inside is build with a steel skeleton. The buiding's exterior color is like a limestone and glazed terra-cotta, it was made with reapeded shapes of triangles, and shaped like a clothes iron. It also had ornaments like lions, human faces, and arches. When I first saw the building my reaction was wow, that is so cool. I wondered how and what made them build it this way. I just realy like the way they lined it up with the street and made it into a big triangle. I have never seen such a thing. The only thing I would probably change would be to put a big American flag right on top just because it is in New York.

JOSEPH HERNANDEZ A.K.A SUPERMAN A.K.A SHAMPOO and my partner brandon a.k.a geek a.k.a goooofyyy. Me, JOE HERNAN came to new design fresh out the box cleaner then a whistle and popular as ever. I was shy because it was a brand new school and I knew I would have to meet new people. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, as a matter of fact it was easy because I had people come to me asking for my name and where im from so I made friends very fast, alot at that. I also had alot of girls after me. As time went by I grew older and I see New Design made me a man. New Design created a super hero and thats when I joined forces with others like brandon a.k.a spidey and we are on a quest to stop pami and judy from taking over the world.

BUILDING BIG MOVIE

In this video we learned about the Eiffel tower, the elevator, and skyscrapers that were all built for a reason. Places were getting crowded and big buildings were being built for people to work in. Some buildings were being made because of competition so if one building was made big then the next person or company would go bigger. Some buildings have had tragic stories, such as The Empire state building and the Twin towers wich were both hit by planes and many were killed. The Empire state was hit by mistake and the Twin Towers were attacked by terrorist. The Elevator was built so that they could build tall building's with out people struggling to get to a high floor. Many people couldn't climb all the steps in a tall building.
